What Your CV Should Look Like

Whether you just graduated or looking to change your career, preparing your CV is the first thing that you need to do above anything else. It all starts with a well-written, professional CV as this document can make or break your chances of landing that job interview.

List Your Skills Relevant To The Position

Brainstorm and think of all the skills that you possess that you think are relevant to the position that you are applying for. Are you a WordPress expert? Are you great with spreadsheets? Do you have graphics expertise and is experienced in using InDesign? What are the other languages that you speak? Make sure that you list all of these skills based on what the company is looking for. For example, the company is looking for a newspaper content editor. You may indicate that you’ve written and edited pieces of work in AP style – or something relevant.

Your Personal Information

Don’t forget to add your personal information like your Name, Address, Marriage Status, Phone Number, and Email address. Put this at the very top of the page.

Compose A Personal Profile

This is completely optional but adds flair to your CV. This is where you can sell yourself – a summary of your skills, hobbies, your strengths, personal qualities, etc. This is like the summary and what recruiters can take a look at and gives them a brief overview of who you are before they divulge deeper into your CV.

Education & Character References

Lastly, don’t forget to include your education and at least 3 people for character references. Add educational achievements and honors/awards received.
